Smart Pop Reinvents the Movie Tie-In

The Girl Who Was on Fire – Movie Edition gives Hunger Games fans movie opinions from their favorite YA authors within days of film premiere

In January 2012, Smart Pop released The Girl Who Was on Fire – Movie Edition, an updated edition of their popular anthology of 16 bestselling Young Adult authors writing about the Hunger Games series. On March 23, 2012, the film The Hunger Games, starring Jennifer Lawrence, hits theaters—and one week later, Smart Pop will provide e-book buyers with those YA authors’ thoughts about the film.

Excitement is highest just before and just after a movie’s release—but traditional publishing can be at a severe disadvantage in trying to answer the latter. “To have print copies of The Girl Who Was on Fire – Movie Edition available and in stores for the film release in late March, we needed to finalize the files—and the information in them—back in December,” said Smart Pop editor-in-chief Leah Wilson, also the book’s editor.

“With our book, we envisioned e-book buyers being able to read the book while waiting for the movie, then pick up their e-reader of choice after they see the film and find fresh content there waiting for them—all as part of a single book package, and a single purchase.

“We see this kind of time-sensitive ‘update’ as a potentially key part of the e-book’s future.”

Smart Pop is also pushing the e-book envelope with The Girl Who Was on Fire – Movie Edition by offering a second e-book product, aimed at readers who bought the first edition of the book: a “Booster Pack” that includes only the new content found in the Movie Edition, including the delayed delivery movie-related content.
