For Immediate Release:
Second printing is underway, more copies expected in October
August 6, 2013 (Los Angeles) – Award-winning graphic novel publisher Archaia Entertainment, an imprint of BOOM! Studios, is proud to announce that the first printing of The Thrilling Adventure Hour (TAH) graphic novel is sold out at the distributor level. In fact, the title was marked “out of stock” three weeks before it was set to debut in comic book shops on August 7.
“We are the good kinds of sellouts? Thank you to the Adventurekateers for your support—you knock us out,” beamed Ben Acker and Ben Blacker, the creators and writers of TAH. “We know you’ll love this book!”
The Thrilling Adventure Hour ($19.95, hardcover, 136 pages, full color, 7.25” x 11.25”, ISBN: 978-1-936393-28-2) is an anthology collection of original genre tales based on segments included in the highly popular stage show and podcast of the same name. The TAH (thrillingadventurehour.com) live performance harkens back to the heyday of old-time radio entertainment, with well-dressed actors (known as the WorkJuice Players), scripts in hands, voice-acting their roles in front a live audience. The performance is recorded and later uploaded as part of the Nerdist Channel family of podcasts. The WorkJuice Players include Paul F. Tompkins, Paget Brewster, Autumn Reeser, Marc Evan Jackson, Mark Gagliardi, Craig Cackowski, Hal Lublin, and more. They are often joined by stars of film and TV who make cameo appearances, including Nathan Fillion, Molly Quinn, and Jason Ritter.
In 2012, Acker and Blacker ran a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to pay for the artists for the graphic novel and wound up raising almost four times what they had initially asked for. All the funds were used to pay for the creative and the stretch goals associated with the campaign. None of the money was used to pay for the production of the book.
Copies of TAH are available at your local comic book shop now, and will be available in book stores and other mass market outlets on August 20. Not sure where to find your nearest comic retailer? Use comicshoplocator.com or findacomicshop.com to find one! If you are unable to find a copy, Archaia and BOOM! have rushed TAH back for a second printing and will have more available by the time of New York Comic Con (October 10-13, 2013 at the Javits Center in New York City).

A few hours ago, The BBC announced who the 12th Doctor will be in the hit series, Doctor Who. So that means at this point that the entire internet knows. In case you’re new to the ‘Who, however, here’s a little info to clue you in. The 50th anniversary episode is coming up around Christmas time (that’s not 50 episodes, just for clarity, that’s 50 years since the series started), and current front-runner, Matt Smith, announced about two months ago that he was leaving the show at that time. If you listened carefully in that moment, you would have heard the thud of millions of Whovian hearts breaking a little bit, in unison.
However, that is the nature of the story: Timelords regenerate, and the story goes on. Today, we are welcoming Peter Capaldi as the twelfth Doctor to grace the series. Capaldi has had a long, celebrated career, and is welcomed with open arms by many fans. Just in case you need a little convincing, or are having trouble placing him, here are a just a couple roles you’re likely to remember him from.
John Frobisher was the Permanent Secretary to the Home Office and Torchwood Three’s liaison to the British government. (TV: Children of Earth: Day Two) He was later appointed informal ambassador to the 456. Passionate and driven, his job became increasingly difficult when all around him began to shirk any responsibility for the disaster that was unfolding.
This TV mini-series, based on the beautiful and brilliant novel by Neil Gaiman, aired in 1996, and also starred Gary Bakewell, Laura Fraser, and Clive Russell.
The band starred a young Peter Capaldi on vocals with an equally young Libby McArthur guesting on backing vocals (who was singer in, the pre His Latest Flame, Sophisticated Boom Boom with Jaqeuline Bradley). Temple Clark on Bass Guitar & Robert Livsey on Drums completed the line up. Trivia fact-Comedian Craig Ferguson had also played drums with The Dreamboys.
This little bit of trivia is just plain fun.
And, of course, like seemingly most British television actors at this point, Capaldi has already been in an episode of Doctor Who. Funny enough, it’s the same episode in which Karen Gillan first made her appearance on the show (as a cultist / soothsayer), long before she took on the role of Amy Pond.
Lucius Caecilius Iucundus was a man who lived in Pompeii before Vesuvius erupted in 79. Husband of Metella and father to Evelina and Quintus, Caecilius was a marble trader with political ambitions.
Of course, Capaldi has been in many, many other things throughout the course of his career, and even played the W.H.O. Doctor in the recent zombie flick, World War Z. I’m sure he will, no doubt, be a wonderful addition to the show. Still, it would have been nice to see a new face on the show, especially a less traditional one (I think we all considered Idris Elba at one point or another, right?).
Although, while I anxiously await Capaldi’s Doctor portrayal, personally, I really would have like to have seen Damien Molony take on the role.
I guess we’ll just have to see how things go with the Christmas Special on November 23rd.
Happy Sunday, everyone.
After acquiring Archaia in June, BOOM! Studios prioritizes getting several of the publisher’s titles back into stores
July 31, 2013 (Los Angeles, CA) – Award-winning publisher Archaia Entertainment has announced that four of its sold-out backlist titles are now or will soon be back in print, ready for fans that missed out the first time to grab their copies! In addition, copies of the Eisner Award-winning Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand will be back for sale in comic book shops as of Sept. 11. The reprints come on the heels of Archaia’s acquisition by BOOM! Northwest Press is pleased to unveil its new comics anthology Anything That Loves, which features comics creators telling stories about romance and sexuality outside of the categories of “gay” and “straight.” Even though the book hasn’t been released yet, it is already set to be one of Northwest Press’ most popular releases, garnering 1000 backers during its Kickstarter funding drive in May.
The anthology features contributions both long-established and new creators, with brand-new work from MariNaomi, Amy T. Falcone, Jason Thompson, Kevin Boze, Roberta Gregory, Tara Madison Avery, and Nick Leonard and a full roster that includes Erika Moen, Maurice Vellekoop, Ellen Forney, Leanne Franson… more than 30 contributors in all.
Anything That Loves features an introduction from editor Charles “Zan” Christensen, explaining the origins of the project and the reason he felt it was important, as a gay man, to tackle the topic of prejudice against bisexuality.
“Could repression of same-sex attraction by bisexual people,” writes Christensen, “be the major contributor to the myth that gay people can ‘choose’ heterosexuality? They aren’t ‘gay’ and hiding it, and being ‘bisexual’ really isn’t something that straight or gay culture puts much stock in. It’s all-or-nothing, and people cram themselves into the box that seems to chafe the least. Could the refusal to accept the existence of bisexuality, then, be a root cause of homophobia itself?”
“Every reader will resonate with some of these tales; others will surprise,” writes PoMoSexuals author Carol Queen, PhD, in her foreword to Anything That Loves. “That’s just how it ought to be! We’re all the same and different, all at once. Between this book and The Rocky Horror Picture Show you ought to be equipped to meet, enjoy, love—and possibly sleep with—just about anybody.”
Northwest Press is a book publisher dedicated to publishing the best lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender comics collections and graphic novels. The company has published eight full-length print graphic novels and over three dozen digital books since its inception in 2010. Its first book, Jon Macy’s Teleny and Camille, received a Lambda Literary Award, and Northwest’s publisher Charles “Zan” Christensen has been recognized as one of OUT magazine’s “OUT 100” and by Gay.net as one of “13 to Watch in 2013“.
Anything That Loves is 216 pages and retails for $29.99. The book made its debut at Comic-Con International in San Diego this month, and will be in Diamond’s PREVIEWS catalog in September for sale in comics shops in November. It will also be available through Apple’s iTunes for reading on the iPad, iPod touch or iPhone, as well as Gumroad and other digital outlets, and direct from the publisher.

July 16th, 2013 – Los Angeles, CA – Award-winning publisher Archaia Entertainment and actress/producer Alyssa Milano (Charmed, Mistresses) are proud to announce Hacktivist, a hardcover, original graphic novel that explores the modern world of hacking and global activism. Inspired by current events from around the world and Milano’s own philanthropic endeavors, Hacktivist is a fast-paced cyber-thriller about friendship and freedom in a time of war. The story follows Ed Hiccox and Nate Graft, the young founders of the world’s most innovative social media company who moonlight secretly as one of the most notorious black-hat hacker teams on the planet. When the U.S. government discovers their operation, they must face the real world beyond the code and choose between loyalty and what they believe to be is right.
“I’m very involved with in global activism and philanthropy. I like the idea of everyday people doing good,” explained Milano. “My inspiration for Hacktivist is actually Jack Dorsey, the creator of Twitter and Square. I picture him leaving the office at night and going home, where he locks himself in his room and starts hacking to change the world.
“I felt Hacktivist was a strong story that I really wanted to tell visually,” Milano expressed. “Doing a graphic novel allowed me to dream big and it gave me the freedom to create without boundaries.”
Hacktivist features the talents of screen and comic writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, artist Marcus To (Cyborg 009, Red Robin), Eisner Award-nominated colorist Ian Herring (Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand, Cyborg 009), and Eisner Award-nominated letterer Deron Bennett (Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand, Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal: Creation Myths), who bring the underground world of revolution and cyber-warfare to pulse-pounding life.
“Hacktivist is literally ripped from headlines,” said Archaia VP of Development Stephen Christy. “It’s a story focusing on the benefit and consequences of our increasingly connected world. To be able to bring Alyssa Milano into the world of comics is very exciting for all of us at Archaia, and by teaming her with Marcus To and Ian Herring fresh off of their brilliant work on Cyborg 009, we’ve built a comic that will hopefully connect with and inspire people all over the world.”
Hacktivist will debut digitally in Fall 2013, followed by the hardcover print release in Summer 2014. A Hacktivist Ashcan comic, limited to 500 copies and containing exclusive preview content, original concept art from Marcus To and Ian Herring, and an interview with Milano, will be distributed for free at the Archaia booth (#2229) at Comic-Con International in San Diego, Calif. (July 17-21).

Perhaps you recall a certain futuristic, sci-fi, completely insane series back in the 90’s called Transmetropolitan? The series was written superbly by Warren Ellis and inked in a brilliant, hyper detailed style by an artist named Darick Robertson. The intensity and balls-to-the-wall attitude of that story has not been matched yet in comics, in my opinion, but a new series with artwork by Robertson and writer Adam Egypt Mortimer appears to be taking a stab at something close to it.
Ballistic is the tale of a failed bank robber in a post apocalyptic world where all technology is alive and has an attitude. Butch is an air conditioning repairman with big dreams of the criminal kind and he’s working to get there with the help of his genetically modified and foul-mouthed gun. They call Repo City State, a reclaimed trash island, home and the place provides plenty of opportunity for Butch and Gun to raise hell.
Matt Pizzolo of Black Mask Studios says “Mortimer’s mix of speculative science, pulpy noire, and drug-addled adventure cooks up a strange brew of Lethal Weapon by way of Cronenberg meets Dr. Who if written by Odd Future.” This promises to be an impressive and wild series with tons of talent behind it. I’m very excited to have the chance to review issue #1 on July 10 and I highly recommend you all check this one out.

About The Films
Batman Begins (2005)
Batman Begins explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight’s emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents’ murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city.
The Dark Knight (2008)
The follow-up to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker (Heath Ledger), who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast as Rachel Dawes. Returning from Batman Begins are Oldman, Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.
Dark Knight Rises (2012)
It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.
But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane. Christian Bale stars, along with Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Morgan Freeman.
