I Sell Comics

Our story today comes to us from the folks at “Tell ‘Em Steve-Dave”. They had a bit of a contest back in June where listeners were given a set of lyrics written by Walt Flannagan and challenged to write a song based on them. I know this was awhile ago by Internet standards, but this music writer was busy finishing school and moving. The old cliche tells us “better late than never,” however, so let’s do this.

While the contest itself was interesting to us, the real focus here is one entry in particular done by “Courage My Love,” twin sisters from Canada who now have one damn good song and a video on YouTube to go with it. Musically their version of the song sounds a bit like Paramore, which is fine by me since I am a fan of their music as well. The video for it has the girls selling comics on the street, lemonade stand style. The table is strewn with comics and a sign that says “I Sell Comics”. It tells the story of how they make comics desirable to their audience. I found it to be a good use of the base they were given and the materials they had on hand to create something fun and unique. Below you will find the video in question, as well as a copy of the lyrics they had to work with.

What manner of creature stands behind this counter
Man or machine is the big mystery
and with every transaction I cement my place in history.

My fingers dance over the register keys leaving your mouth agape
and it’s not ’cause I make King Kong look like just another ape
but it’s just another sale to this comics-selling alpha male.

I could sell comics to a blind man
a Wednesday warrior through and through
and you’ll buy everything I tell you to.
I sell comics baby. Comics baby. Comics baby. Oooooooo…..Yeahhhhhhhh

In WW two the allies kicked nazi ass and Hitler sobbed nein, nein, nein
Just like my competition when they hang that going out of business sign.

Song ends with register sounds, drawer opening/closing

UPDATED: Expand Your Comic Mind Contest!

We at Geek Girls NetworkGuerrilla Geek, and Nerds in Babeland love comic books! Unfortunately, while comic-book movie adaptations are making millions at the box office, how many movie goers actually read the comics?

Our collective websites want to do as much as we can to bring new (and old) readers further into the comics universe. To make this even easier, we have reworked our original contest to include Facebook! If you are not a member of the social network, you can email your answers to comicbookcontest [at] gmail [dot] com.

We will be holding monthly (sometimes weekly) contests to inspire new readers on this Facebook page. The winner will get a free copy of whatever graphic novel/comic book we are giving out that month!

Our first and second contests will run simultaneously!

Expand Your Comic Mind Contest

We at Geek Girls Network, Guerrilla Geek, and Nerds in Babeland love comic books! Unfortunately, while comic-book movie adaptations are making millions at the box office, how many movie goers actually read the comics?

Our collective websites want to do as much as we can to bring new readers into the comics universe. Starting today, January 17th, we will be holding an ongoing contest to inspire new readers. We are asking you to purchase a comic that you haven’t read before (or show proof that you have legally attained a digital copy of a #1 issue). Every week, one randomly selected submission will win a comic book or graphic novel!

Please read the rules below. Submissions for the first contest must be made to by Friday, January 28 at 5 p.m. EST.

The first prize that we are giving away is Fables Volume 1: Legends in Exile!

Have you read a comic recently? Have you ever read a comic? If you answered no to either of these questions, we think that it’s about time you get out there and read something new!

All you need to do to enter the contest is buy a #1 issue or Volume 1 of a trade paperback (legal digital copies count too!), then email us two positive or negative reactions to prove that you read it.

One randomly selected person will win whatever comic book or graphic novel is listed as the prize for that contest week.

1. Please send all submissions to

2. In the subject line, write “COMIC CONTEST.”

3. In the body of the e-mail, write your name and address so we already have it if you win. Also include your twitter name if you’d like us to mention your victory!

4. The e-mail should also have an ATTACHED photo of the comic you purchased and the receipt. Both the comic and the receipt should be clearly visible.

5. The point of this contest is to get new readers into comics. Please don’t enter by taking pictures of your weekly comic book pull list. That’s just not cool. In order to guarantee this, the book you pick up must be a #1 (issue, volume, etc) or an original standalone graphic novel. Otherwise, we will assume you are trying to cheat us, and we will disqualify your entry.

6. You can enter as many times as you like, but each submission must include a different comic book that you have purchased.

7. When we get your e-mail, you will receive a confirmation e-mail within 24 hours. If you do not receive a confirmation e-mail, it is okay to re-submit.

8. Winners will be chosen with a random number generator.
