Delusion: The Best Haunted Attraction In Southern California (And Possibly Anywhere Else)

0

I am a huge horror nerd. I love scary movies with spooky soundtracks, Halloween is my favorite holiday, and October makes me the happiest because it means my friends and I get to visit all the worthy haunted attractions in the Los Angeles area. We’ve done the typical LA staples like Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights, Knott’s Scary Farm, the Haunted Hayride, etc. They’re fun and charming in their own way, but Delusion surpasses them all easily!

Appropriately named, Jon Braver is the genius behind this live, interactive, chill inducing “Haunted Play” that not only relies on some incredible production value, but includes some of the best live actors I’ve ever seen. The best part of this attraction is that the story changes every single year, and this latest one, about author Elena Fitzgerald’s literary (and not so friendly) character creations coming to life, is my favorite yet. I loved it so much I went twice this year! And, to be honest, my favorite part is seeing my friends who never get scared, actually freak out. No fake chainsaws needed here!

1554550_804456889604360_8974668830822990751_n

The location has also changed each year, so none of us lucky (or unlucky?) visitors have any idea what to expect, and, this year, they secured an enormous, super creepy old house in the historic West Adams district. It was truly remarkable to see how each room in the house was staged in detail to really help the audience feel like they’re part of the story and to up the psychological thriller factor to the holy sh** degree.

There’s not a single negative thing I can say about Delusion. The actors are insanely talented, the atmosphere and special effects are jaw dropping, the musical score is spine tingling, and even the welcoming and social media staff are lovely. Fans are called Delusioners, so I’m gonna go ahead and call myself a Delusionerd. I’ve been one since my first, amazing Haunted Play experience, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next year.

Rightfully so, this event sells out immediately, but, lucky for you, they release new dates every so often so make sure to sign up for their official website newsletter, follow them on Twitter, or like them on Facebook.

Fellow nerd celebrities are big fans of Delusion, too!

Criminal-Macabre_Final-Night_Th-30-Days-of-Night-Crossover_4

Review: Final Night #4 of 4

0

Criminal-Macabre_Final-Night_Th-30-Days-of-Night-Crossover_4

Writing: Steve Niles

Art:  Christopher Mitten

Review by Melissa Megan

Cal McDonald and Eben Olemaun have been battling it out in the middle of Los Angeles. Eben is out for revenge after the murder of his wife, Stella, by creating an army of vampires and feasting on the human race. He sells this plan to his followers by convincing them that vampires should no longer hide in the shadows of night but become the superior race on earth, knocking humans down on the food chain. Cal is now among the world of ghouls, walking and fighting but not necessarily living. He’s been tormented by a black vomit illness since his ‘change’ and struggles to maintain the strength needed to defeat the vampire leader and save the human race.

Final Night is the final issue of the Criminal Macabre/ 30 Days of Night crossover and writer Steve Niles has declared that only one of the series will survive when it’s over. I’m not a spoiler type, but I will tell you that I’m very happy about the outcome.

Cal pulls himself out of the rubble, entrails and organs on the floor, ready to keep kicking ass. That is what the man does best, at the sacrifice of his own physical and mental well being. It’s obvious to his best ghoul buddy, Mo’Lock, that he won’t be sticking around for much longer in his current condition and Mo’Lock is determined to do anything he can to save Cal. Blood is required to heal his already dead body, but who’s blood? And how much?

Meanwhile, Eben has released his army upon the Los Angeles night, beginning with the busy party strip. They feast, tear and demolish their way through the crowds, hungry for destruction and blood. Eben has Detective Alice Blood, Cal’s love interest, and knows that Cal will come for her. The two leaders will soon come face to face with their armies; ghouls versus vampires. Only one side can win this fight and there’s no doubt blood will be shed.

I’ve been reading Criminal Macabre for years, it’s one of my top favorite series. 30 Days of Night is also quality work, just not as much of a draw for me as the big, rag tag personality of Cal McDonald. Steve Niles has pulled off this crossover with skill, managing to let the two main characters meet and go to war without diminishing the power of either. These are two bad ass dudes, each with their own personal agendas and commitments to their cause. Christopher Mitten’s art has been a treat and a perfect companion to this story. I’ve very much enjoyed seeing the two clash and I think the conclusion of Final Night will satisfy readers, regardless of who you were hoping to see come out on top.

A Nerdy Girl Goes To the Symphony

Mehta receives a star

Yesterday was an exciting day in the classical world of music. Zubin Mehta was given a star on the Walk of Fame and conducted the Israel Philharmonic at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. I was privileged enough to attend the concert in the evening.

For those of you that don’t know who Zubin Mehta is, he is an Indian conductor of Western Music. He was born in Mumbai, India in 1936. Yes, you read that correctly. 1936. As of this year, he has been conducting for 50 years and will be celebrating his 75th birthday in April. There are few conductors that are as famous as he is. I have always wanted to watch him, and last night did not disappoint.

When I drove up to the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, I was met with quite a shock. There were many protesters (peaceful at least) outside the venue. They were protesting because it was the Israel Philharmonic and they do not wish to support anything out of Israel. Now, I can understand politics and why someone would or would not support a government, but to protest a classical concert? It boggled my mind.

Walt Disney Concert Hall

Once I arrived inside, I found out that my seats were behind the orchestra. The Walt Disney Concert Hall, if you have not had the pleasure of attending, is a theater in the round, of sorts. The music sounds the same from all different angles, just the visual changes. In the picture I’ve included, I sat at the very top right of the image. To watch Mehta’s expressive face and gestures was something I will not forget.

On the bill was Haydn’s 96th Symphony, “The Miracle”, as well as Mahler’s 5th Symphony. They began the concert by conducting the National Anthem, and then was followed by the Israel National Anthem. After this was finished, the orchestra shrunk in size to accommodate the proper arrangement for the Haydn work. I will be honest, I’m not a huge fan of Haydn, but this work is one of his later symphonies and is quite remarkable. I have never heard Mahler’s 5th Symphony live before. I was completely blown away. The entire work is over an hour in length and requires quite a lot of endurance from all members of the orchestra. Even if you have not heard Mahler’s work before, you can hear where film composers of the 20th century drew inspiration from it. The Israel Philharmonic is to be commended on how well they performed it. 70 minutes is an awfully long time to play. When the baton dropped on the last beat, almost the entire audience was on their feet, shouting their joy at the conclusion, myself included.

It never fails to amaze me at the vitality a conductor must have when in front of an orchestra. My degree is in Music Education, so I’d like to think I know a thing or two about music. Watching a man who has been conducting for over 50 years, has been conducting this particular orchestra for that length of time as well, and to see a man almost 75 years old do all of this was an experience I will never forget. If you ever get the chance to see him conduct, do it. You won’t be disappointed.
